big kicks on high street

“As he walked he took the folded Freeman from his sidepocket, unfolded it, rolled it lengthwise in a baton and tapped it at each sauntering step against his trouserleg.”

from James Joyce’s Ulysses (The Lotus Eaters). Audio from RTÉ Radio (Ireland), 1982.

A de(re)construction of one line of Joyce’s prose.

This piece was born out of Meredith Monk’s “View 2” (from Turtle Dreams, ECM Records, 1983). It’s a reworking of Monk’s 4-note pattern into something new, in the spirit of engaging with the art and artists that have come before. To create a dialogue; to place oneself in a continuum from past to present to some future.

Walking

another continuum: nostalgia, an ending, an eye looking forward
